ChatGPT Privacy Opt-Out — Operator Playbook

What you are actually controlling

OpenAI can use consumer ChatGPT conversations to improve models unless you opt out. Opting out affects future chats — it does not erase data already used in past training runs, and it does not remove abuse-monitoring retention windows (typically up to 30 days for safety review).

Business plans (Team, Enterprise, Edu) and the API default to no training on your content — but policies change; verify in your admin console before pasting client secrets.

This playbook is for operators who paste real business data into ChatGPT and need a sane default setup.

Step 1 — Turn off model training (consumer accounts)

Web (signed in)

1. Click your profile icon
2. Open Settings
3. Go to Data Controls
4. Toggle off — "Improve the model for everyone"

Your chat history remains visible to you; new conversations should not enter training pipelines.

Mobile

1. Open sidebar → profile icon
2. Data Controls
3. Disable "Improve the model for everyone"

The setting applies account-wide across devices once saved.

Signed-out web use

1. Click ? (help) bottom-right
2. Settings
3. Disable "Improve the model for everyone"

Step 2 — Use Temporary Chat for sensitive threads

When you need a disposable session:

1. Start a new chat
2. Enable Temporary Chat (model selector / top of chat depending on UI version)

Temporary chats:

• Do not appear in normal history sidebar
• Do not create Memory entries
• Are not used for model improvement (per OpenAI's public docs)
• Are still subject to short-term safety retention (~30 days) before deletion

Rule of thumb: If you would not email it to a stranger, use Temporary Chat or do not paste it.

Step 3 — Manage Memory separately

Memory is not the same as training, but stored facts persist across chats.

1. Settings → Personalization / Memory
2. Review saved memories — delete stale items
3. Turn Memory off entirely for shared machines or contractor accounts

Step 4 — Privacy portal (belt and suspenders)

OpenAI's privacy portal lets you submit "Do not train on my content" requests at account level. Use this if you previously opted out via support email — those requests remain honored.

Also available: data export and account deletion if you are offboarding a user.

Step 5 — Business and API accounts

ChatGPT Team / Business / Enterprise: Training on business data is off by default per OpenAI enterprise documentation. Confirm:

• Admin dashboard → data controls
• Whether third-party plugins or connectors copy data elsewhere
• Whether custom GPTs store knowledge you uploaded

API: Default is no training. Opt-in sharing is separate (e.g., feedback in Playground). Use org keys, rotate them, and log which apps call the API.

Operator hygiene checklist

• "Improve the model for everyone" disabled on every consumer seat
• Team policy: Temporary Chat for client identifiers
• Memory reviewed monthly or disabled on shared logins
• No production credentials in any chat
• Client contract mentions AI tools if deliverables touch ChatGPT
• Alternative: local-first tools for regulated data

What opt-out does not do

• Does not make ChatGPT HIPAA-compliant by itself
• Does not remove chats from your personal history (delete manually)
• Does not guarantee zero logging for safety/legal holds
• Does not retroactively untrain models on past messages

For regulated workloads, use approved enterprise agreements, zero-retention options where offered, or self-hosted models — not consumer toggles alone.
